If you recollect, I had written about the amazing silk embroidery designs, where the threads were so fine that the final design looked like a photograph. I now introduce you to the impressionist photograph or sketch design done through your embroidery machine. This is called the photo-stitch technique and is reminiscent of pencil or crayon sketches, rather than embroidery. If you take the example of this girl, the entire design is done in 10-12 layers of stitches. The first couple of layers are just the skin on her face. The next few would focus on features like eyes, nose and ears. Then would come the finishing touches to the hair, making the entire embroidery design more dense. Each of these layers are stitched one after the other. You can liken it to a far away blurred image slowly focusing and coming into the foreground. The final output looks awesome and complex, but it is actually done in 12 easy layers. (like they say, the only way to chew an elephant is to bite it into small pieces)

The bag itself gave me the excuse (like I really needed one) to go fabric hunting. So we, my husband, Mark and Mildred, his Mom, loaded up in the truck and headed out to Pensacola to see what we could find. Crestview is not the biggest town to fabric shop in. With most, all the flip flops were applique embroidery designs and I was on a mission. I managed to get out of town with some really good bargains, came home and sat down and started sewing. I like really bright and unusual color contrast and came up with the combinations that I did. The ones with the fringe flowers is Phyllis’ design. Those are my favorites. It’s real easy to do as long as you use a contrasting bobbin thread, so it can be seen and cut after it’s stitched. Once it’s carefully cut, you pull the top thread back through and fluff the threads.”

One among the many great features that we have on the brother embroidery machine is that it can sew up to 1500 stitches per minute, which means that you can embroider much faster than with normal machines. It also has a built-in automatic needle threader which ensures that you dont have to learn to thread your needle: the machine does it for you! Sew Much Fun: A good book on Embroidery Design SoftwareOne of my friends recently gifted me this Embroidery Design Software book – Sew Much Fun: 14 Projects to Stitch & Machine Embroider and I was overwhelmed since it answered quite a few questions I had hidden inside me in an easy lucid manner. You definitely must not miss it! One of the most important points is that it begins from embroidery design basics. The language and graphics used are very good which made reading interesting. Take a look at the language in the basics: “When you machine embroider, several major factors influence the quality of the finished design: they include embroidery machine (or module) maintenance, the embroidery design itself, the products used and the user technique.” Then the book further goes on to exemplify the four details through photographs. Makes it quite comprehensive, doesn’t it? It would be helpful to know something about machine embroidery designing to grasp the contents of the book easily, especially the 14 projects. The one I liked best was Fisherman’s Wall Clock. The book also comes with a bonus CDROM with 40 free embroidery designs. If you do read this book, I would be delighted to have your comments on the projects that you loved to embroider.
